There are two common bed bug types. The most frequently found bed bugs are known as 'the Common bed bug' and the 'Martin bug' (which normally lives in nests). Bed bugs are wingless insects, approximately 5mm long, with an oval shape, six legs and antennae. They are a red-brown colour and are a flat shape. After feeding, their colour turns purple and their bodies may become more rounded.

Health Hazards
Bed bugs are not carriers of diseases but they do feed on human blood. This will usually happen at night time when people are asleep, motionless in their beds. The bed bugs inject fluid into the sleeping person which helps them to get their blood meal.

The bites will most likely cause itching and irritation and some people can be especially sensitive to these bites which can result in allergy and inflammation, especially in areas such as the arms and shoulders. The most severe cases of this will result in the need for medical attention. If you do suspect a bed bug problem, it is vital that the bed bugs are eliminated before these possibilities become an issue!

Where they hide
Bed bugs can hide themselves in a variety of places such as mattresses, under bed bases, bed frames, wall sockets, within headboards, loose wallpaper, within paintings, suspended ceilings, partitioning, skirting boards, clothing and furnishings and anywhere with a dark area which provides harbourage, such as cracks. Bed bugs prefer to remain close together and with frequent feeding, adults can live for as long as eighteen months. Bed bugs breed by laying eggs that hatch after approximately ten to twenty days. They will then grow, going through various stages. Each stage requires that the bed bug feeds on blood so they become strong adults after usually nine to eighteen weeks. The females can lay between 150 and 345 eggs during her life span.

Their presence in a room can be detected by the following . . .
Bed bugs are not usually seen during the daytime
Excrement spots can be found close to where they live and on the bedding
Blood spots on bed
Whitish un-hatched and hatched eggs around area they reside
A sweet almond smell is common when the infestation is severe

Bed bugs will not travel far from the host but they can move into other rooms using ways such as moving through interconnecting spaces. They can be transferred from place to place with objects such as clothing, linen and furniture.
